Not sure what you can do to help the environment?

Here are some top tips - you can choose one of these for your pledge, or add one of your own.

  • Only boil as much water as you need. But remember to cover the element if not using an electric kettle.
  • Turn your thermostat down by 1°C. Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10% abs save you around £40 per year.
  • Don’t leave appliances, such as TV’s stereos and DVD players, on standby. Remember not to leave appliances like mobile phones or laptops on charge unnecessarily.
  • Install cavity wall insulation. A third of the heat lost in an un-insulated home is through the walls. Cavity wall insulation is easy to have fitted and could save you between £130 to £160 per year on your heating bills.
  • Top up  your loft insulation to 270mm (approximately 10.5 inches). Loft insulation is so straight forward that you can even install it yourself. Insulating your loft is not expensive and a standard 270mm layer could save as much as £180 to £220 a year on fuel bills.
  • Install at least three Energy Saving Recommended light bulbs. They last up to 12 times longer than ordinary bulbs and could save up to £100 over the lifetime of the bulb.
  • Install a condenser boiler. An old boiler is usually a wasteful one. Replacing it with a condenser boiler could save you a third on your heating bills.
  • Buy appliances with the Energy Saving Recommended logo on them. It’s a quick and easy way to identify the most efficient products available. You’ll find the logo on everything from fridges and dishwashers to TV’s, and one Energy Saving Recommended appliance could save you up to £45 a year in  energy costs alone.
  • Wash your laundry at 30°C. Washing at 30°C can save 40% of the energy used to wash at higher temperatures
  • Don’t use the car for short journeys. You can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and air pollution by reducing the amounf of fuel you use. That means walking, cycling or taking the bus whenever you are able to.
