Who said eco-friendly couldn't be fun?
June, 2008
A Green Market, a bicycle-powered smoothie-maker and fun, sustainable games are all a sign that work is well underway for the return of this year’s ‘Sheffield Is My Planet Week’ (2nd – 8th June 2008).
Organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that Sheffield Is My Planet, which is delivered in partnership by diva creative and the Sheffield First Environment Partnership, host a week of events bigger and better than ever before, with enough environmentally friendly activities to leave people, families and businesses clued up on eco-knowledge!
A giant, inflatable Sheffield Is My Planet globe will be erected at Barkers Pool throughout the week, which incorporates the annual World Environment Day (Thursday 5th June). The week includes a Green Market, a city centre public awareness event and the business event – ‘Sheffield Is My Planet Hothouse’, which is sponsored by E.ON.
Sheffield Is My Planet will also be present at Meadowhall Shopping Centre as part of the week, to offer information and advice on what people can do to ‘do their bit’ for their local environment.
The Green Market will open its gates to the public on World Environment Day on Fargate in the city centre, and members of the public will be able to buy ‘green’ products and services from environmentally friendly market traders. Veolia Environmental Services and Sheffield City Council are also holding a ‘Plastic Bag Amnesty’ where the public will be able to exchange their carrier bags for reusable ‘bags for life’ at the market.
The public awareness event on Saturday 7th June, will form a central information point at Barkers Pool, and Sheffield Is My Planet is bringing together the very best of Sheffield’s environmental organisations to offer advice around climate change and encourage members of the public that their help can really make a difference. The bicycle-powered smoothie-maker and environmentally friendly games will give the day the ‘fun-factor’ and South Yorkshire Energy Centre are building a special power-source out of sustainable materials, which promises to be something not to be missed!
For business leaders and decision makers in the city, the Sheffield Is My Planet Week will also include a ‘Hothouse’ business event. The event will be held for business leaders to explore the challenges of climate change and how Sheffield can move forward to a low carbon future.
Mark Daly, Sheffield Is My Planet Coordinator, said: “We really want to make Sheffield Is My Planet week as interactive and engaging as possible, and we have worked hard to ensure that the public will really enjoy what will be on offer. It’s important that everyone realises the seriousness of climate change, but we also think we should show people what can be done in a fun way and how helping our local community can be really rewarding. Anyone and everyone is welcome throughout the week and I look forward to talking to members of the public and hopefully seeing many smiling faces!”
The environment is a hot topic for Sheffield's business community
June, 2008
Sheffield Is My Planet will turn up the heat on the city’s business leaders and decision-makers this week, as the environment awareness campaign hosts its ‘Hothouse’ event on Friday 6th June 2008.
The ‘Hothouse’ forms part of Sheffield Is My Planet Week, which is delivered in Partnership by Sheffield First Environment Partnership and diva creative. The week kicks off on June 2nd with a range of events and activities designed to engage people of all ages who live, work, learn or play in Sheffield in green issues, and show how they can become more eco-friendly and take small steps to limit climate change.
The free event is sponsored by E.ON and will take place at the Cutlers’ Hall in the city centre. It will provide an opportunity for Sheffield’s business to explore the challenges of climate change as Sheffield looks to a future as a low carbon, climate change-ready city. Businesses will have an opportunity to inform the City Council’s Climate Change Action Plan and Strategy and find out more about new practices and facilities that businesses can integrate into their existing operations, to reduce their impact on the environment.
Also taking place during Sheffield Is My Planet week will be: a ‘Green Market’ selling environmentally-friendly products and products from sustainable sources; and a public awareness event in Barker’s Pool where representatives of environmental organisations in the area will be on hand to offer information and advice to help people brush up on their eco-knowledge – a bicycle-powered smoothie-maker will also be on offer for eco-friendly refreshments.
Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Local Environment, said: “Although people have become more aware of the seriousness of climate change, information on what businesses and their staff can do to limit their contribution to it is rather less well-known.
“The Hothouse event is a fantastic opportunity to bring green issues to the top of the agenda for Sheffield businesses, and should help us all work together to lead the way as a low carbon city.”
